External Links
These are links to other websites that are, in various ways, related to this one. They may be related to Canidae, related to biology in general, inspirations for this site, or something that I personally find to be interesting. They are ALL worth looking at.
- The IUCN/SSC Canid Specialist Group
- The group consists of 75 of the world's leading biologists who specialize in canids. These guys are basically in charge of all conservation efforts having to do with Canidae as well as other wildlife management issues. The website is VERY information dense, but not very interactive. The Red Wolf and Grey Wolf actually have their own, seperate specialist group: The IUCN/SSC Wolf Specialist Group.
- Tree Of Life Web Project
- This website is dedicated to cataloging every species in a way similar to what I've done with Canidae (without the Aggregate, of course). However, in my opinion, it has become overcomplicated. It includes taxonomic levels that are not usually listed. The website is unlikely to understood by anyone outside of the scientific community, and, therefore, fails to get people interested in the life around them. However, it really is an amazing site with a lofty goal that, when achieved, will be a high point for biology as a whole. Perhaps the loftiest part of that goal is having biologists agree on the classification of everything.
- IUCN Red List
- The IUCN Red List is one of the few global indices for conservation status. The list is extensive. This website explains current conservation threats and explains the technical definitions behind the IUCN categories (Least Concern [LC], Endangered [EN], etc.). If you type "canidae" into the search bar there, you'll get a much more in depth discussion of the threats to each species than I have chosen to go into. Be sure to read the "justification" section for the Ethiopian Wolf if you don't think Biology involves math. Math is what gets people's attention and gets things done.
- ARKive
- ARKive, while not information intensive, is an amazing source of various wildlife-related photos and videos. The MyARKive feature was the inspiration for the Aggregate on this website.
- Animal Diversity Web
- An excellent website that includes lots of information about many species in kingdom Animalia. It also includes pictures of the animals and photos of specimens such as skulls. It's run by the University of Michigan.
- Defenders of Wildlife
- Defenders of Wildlife is an organization that promotes the conservation of wildlife species and subspecies in the United States. They also focus on animals that are not endanger of going extinct but instead are in danger of being extirpated from the United States.
